SC to Constitute Expert Committee for Holistic Examination of Mining in Aravallis
The Supreme Court on Wednesday said it will constitute an expert committee comprising domain experts to undertake an exhaustive and holistic examination of mining and related issues in the Aravallis.
The Court observed that illegal mining can lead to irreversible damage. A bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and Vipul M Pancholi directed Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati, amicus curiae K Parameshwar, to suggest in four weeks the names of environmentalists and scientists who have expertise in mining so that an expert body can be constituted to look into the aspects.
The bench said that the committee will work under the direction and supervision of the apex court.
The court also extended its order, which kept in abeyance its November 20 directions that accepted a uniform definition of Aravallis hills and ranges.
During the hearing, the bench took on record assurance of Additional Solicitor General K M Nataraj, appearing for the Rajasthan government, that no such unauthorised mining shall take place.

Lucknow Becomes First Zero Fresh Waste Dump City
Lucknow has become Uttar Pradesh’s first “zero fresh waste dump” city after achieving 100% scientific processing of municipal solid waste under the Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban, officials said.
The milestone follows the commissioning of the Shivari Solid Waste Management Plant, which has a processing capacity of 700 metric tonnes per day.
With three such facilities now operational, the Lucknow Municipal Corporation can process over 2,100 metric tonnes of waste daily—matching the city’s total waste generation.
Officials said door-to-door waste collection efficiency has risen to 96.53%, while source segregation levels exceed 70%. Organic waste is converted into compost and biogas, while inorganic waste is recycled or processed into Refuse Derived Fuel for industrial use.
The city has also processed a significant portion of its legacy waste and reclaimed land previously used for dumping.
Authorities said the initiative reflects Lucknow’s shift towards sustainable and circular waste management practices.
