June 6, 2025, New Delhi: In a significant signal of thawing diplomatic relations between India and Canada, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today announced that he will attend the 51st G7 Summit in Canada later this month.

The development follows an invitation extended by newly elected Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, indicating a potential reset in bilateral ties after a prolonged period of strain.

The G7 Summit will be held from June 15 to 17 in Kananaskis, Alberta. Prime Minister Modi’s participation comes at a time when India-Canada relations appear to be on the mend following tensions during the tenure of former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. The invitation by Prime Minister Carney marks a notable shift in tone and engagement between the two democracies.

In a post on social media platform X , Prime Minister Modi wrote: “Glad to receive a call from Prime Minister Mark Carney of Canada. Congratulated him on his recent election victory and thanked him for the invitation to the G7 Summit in Kananaskis later this month. As vibrant democracies bound by deep people-to-people ties, India and Canada will work together with renewed vigour, guided by mutual respect and shared interests. Look forward to our meeting at the Summit.”

Prime Minister Modi’s visit is expected to focus on India’s contributions to global economic resilience, digital governance, and climate leadership, alongside strengthening bilateral engagement with key global partners, including Canada.

According to PIB, the two leaders spoke over the phone, during which Prime Minister Modi conveyed his congratulations to Prime Minister Carney and welcomed the opportunity to cooperate more closely. Both sides acknowledged the strong people-to-people ties that anchor the bilateral relationship.

The Group of Seven, or G7, is a forum of seven of the world's largest advanced economies — Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States. India, although not a member, is frequently invited as a guest nation to participate in deliberations on critical global issues including climate change, economic development, technology, and geopolitical stability.
