Chennai, July 13, 2025:
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has written to Union External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar, demanding immediate diplomatic efforts to secure the release of Indian fishermen and their boats from Sri Lankan custody.
The CM noted that seven Indian fishermen, along with their fishing vessel, were apprehended by the Sri Lankan Navy earlier today, July 13, 2025.
The fishermen, operating the mechanised boats IND-TN-10-MM-746 and IND-TN-10-MM-1040, faced separate incidents.
While the Sri Lankan Navy arrested the seven fishermen and took their boat bearing registration number IND-TN-10-MM-746 into custody, the mechanised boat IND-TN-10-MM-1040 was struck by a Sri Lankan naval vessel, causing significant damage to its stern.
Stalin described these recurring incidents as deeply alarming, noting they threaten the safety and livelihoods of fishermen while subjecting their families to prolonged economic hardship and emotional distress.
He highlighted that 232 Tamil Nadu fishing boats and 50 fishermen remain in Sri Lankan custody since 2024, urging the Union Government to leverage all diplomatic channels to end these apprehensions and expedite the release of all detained fishermen and their boats.
