Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh interacted with veterans and families of the fallen heroes of the 1965 India-Pakistan war at South Block, New Delhi, marking sixty years since India’s victory. 

He paid glowing tributes to the soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice and highlighted the bravery shown in battles such as Asal Uttar, Chawinda, and Phillora. 

Special mention was made of Param Vir Chakra awardee Abdul Hamid for his courage during the Battle of Asal Uttar, emphasizing that true bravery lies in the heart, not the weapon.

Major Highlights

Honouring Heroes and Sacrifice

* Mr. Singh praised the heroism of Indian forces, stating India’s sovereignty would never be compromised.

* Paid tribute to Abdul Hamid’s tank-busting valour and recalled the collective spirit that led to victory.

Leadership and National Resolve

* Credited Lal Bahadur Shastri’s strong leadership in 1965 for rallying India in adversity.

* Asserted that India's victories result from the nation’s collective resolve, not just battlefield tactics.

Continued Legacy and Operation Sindoor

* Drew a parallel to the recent Operation Sindoor, describing it as a reflection of India’s enduring strength and resolve in the face of terror.

Commitment to Defence Forces and Families

* Reiterated the government's focus on the dignity and welfare of soldiers, veterans, and families of martyrs.

* Emphasized ongoing defence modernization and training to ensure that India's forces remain equipped and prepared.

Veterans Share Experiences

* The event featured war veterans sharing strategic insights and personal stories, with a focus on courage and resilience.

 Lt Gen Satish K Nambiar (Retd) offered strategic reflections.

* Vir Chakra awardee Maj RS Bedi (Retd) recounted his gripping battlefield narrative

* A documentary recalled pivotal battles, and the Western Command’s role was highlighted.

The event was attended by Chief of the Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Western Command Lt Gen Manoj Kumar Katiyar, General Officer Commanding Delhi Area Lt Gen Bhavnish Kumar, other senior serving officers, decorated veterans, gallantry awardees and family members of 1965 war heroes.

The ceremony served as a tribute to the sacrifices made during the 1965 war and an inspiration for future generations to uphold the values of courage, sacrifice, and service before self.
