New Delhi, December 14, 2025:
President Droupadi Murmu today said that energy conservation is the most environmentally friendly and reliable source of energy, underlining that it is no longer an option but a critical necessity of the present time.
She was addresing after presenting the National Energy Conservation Awards 2025 and prizes of the National Painting Competition on Energy Conservation on the occasion of National Energy Conservation Day in New Delhi.
She explained that saving energy does not mean using less, but using energy wisely, responsibly, and efficiently. The President highlighted everyday practices such as avoiding unnecessary use of electrical appliances, adopting energy-efficient devices, making use of natural light and ventilation, and embracing solar and renewable energy solutions.
According to her, these measures not only save energy but also help reduce carbon emissions, maintain clean air and protect water resources, thereby supporting a balanced ecosystem. She stated that every unit of energy saved reflects responsibility towards nature and concern for future generations.
'Youth awareness vital for sustainable development'
The President emphasized that awareness among youth and children regarding energy conservation is essential to achieving national goals in this sector and ensuring sustainable development of the country.
She noted that access to affordable and clean energy empowers communities, stimulates local economies, and creates new growth opportunities. Green energy, she said, is not confined to electricity generation alone but is a powerful tool for empowerment and inclusive development.
'Government initiatives reducing fossil fuel dependence'
President Murmu expressed satisfaction over initiatives such as the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana and the National Green Hydrogen Mission, which are helping reduce India’s dependence on fossil fuels.
She also mentioned government measures promoting renewable energy and energy efficiency through Renewable Consumption Obligations and Production Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes. Highlighting India’s progress, she said that the country’s energy efficiency efforts in 2023–24 resulted in savings of 53.60 million tonnes of oil equivalent, leading to significant economic savings and a substantial reduction in CO₂ emissions.
'Collective responsibility needed for energy transition'
The President stressed that participation from every sector and citizen is necessary for the success of India’s energy transition. She stated that behavioural change is crucial for achieving energy efficiency across sectors.
Referring to India’s cultural ethos, she said that living in harmony with nature forms the foundation of the global message “Lifestyle for Environment – LiFE.” She appreciated the efforts of all stakeholders working in the field of energy conservation and said their contribution would ensure a healthy and bright future for coming generations.
President Murmu expressed confidence that with collective responsibility, partnership, and public participation, India would continue to play a leading role in energy conservation and achieve its goals towards a greener future.
