Jitendra Singh Lauds Indigenous Tele-Robotic Ultrasound System
Science and Technology Minister Dr Jitendra Singh said that the indigenously developed Tele-Robotic Ultrasonography (TUS) system has marked a major step in extending specialised healthcare beyond conventional settings.
Dr. Singh was speaking to the media after witnessing a live demonstration of the system that linked All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) New Delhi with India’s Maitri Research Station in Antarctica.
Dr Singh said that the tele-robotic system, developed jointly by AIIMS and Indian Institute of Technology Delhi in collaboration with the National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research under the Ministry of Earth Sciences, uses a robotic arm with an ultrasound probe that replicates a sonographer’s hand movements with high precision and minimal delay. He noted that the system provides diagnostically reliable imaging and can support assessments of abdominal organs, cardiac functions and trauma situations.
He said the innovation exemplifies the convergence of AI, robotics and real-time clinical expertise and has wide potential applications. He further noted that the system can be used from polar research stations and disaster zones to border outposts and rural health centres, where specialist medical services are hard to access.
The Union Minister added that TUS can help bridge healthcare gaps across geography, reduce the need for emergency evacuations, and improve timely medical decision-making.
