New Delhi, April 21, 2026:

India is observing National Civil Services Day on April 21, commemorating the historic address by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel in 1947, in which he described civil servants as the “Steel Frame of India.”

The Government of India formally designated April 21 as Civil Services Day in 2006 to honour this legacy and promote excellence in public administration.

Civil servants in the country are selected through the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) examination, considered one of the most competitive in India. They play a key role in governance, including administration, development planning, law and order, disaster management and welfare delivery.

President Droupadi Murmu extended her warm greetings on Civil Services Day.

In a post on X, she wrote: "Warm greetings to all civil servants on Civil Services Day.

Your commitment continues to strengthen responsive governance and reinforce public institutions. From the formulation of innovative, future-oriented and citizen-centric policies, to their effective implementation on the ground, your work significantly impacts the quality of life of millions.

As Bharat advances with renewed aspirations, your integrity and empathy will be instrumental in bridging gaps, fostering inclusivity, and strengthening trust between the State and its citizens. May you continue to uphold the highest standards of public service and contribute meaningfully to the building of a more equitable and progressive nation."

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also extended his greetings to all civil servants on Civil Services Day.

In a post on X, he wrote "Greetings to all civil servants on Civil Services Day. This is an occasion to further strengthen the resolve to work towards good governance and nation building.

From the grassroots to policy-making, the efforts of civil servants touch countless lives and contribute to India’s progress. May our civil servants continue to serve with excellence, compassion and innovation, upholding the highest standards of duty."

From raising awareness in rural areas on health, education, sanitation and financial inclusion to implementing government schemes on the ground, civil servants contribute significantly to nation-building.

Their work continues to support the vision of a self-reliant and developed India.

National Civil Services Day serves as a reminder of the dedication and integrity of public servants working across the country.
