Prime Minister Narendra Modi was conferred with the ‘Grand Cross of the Order of Makarios III’, the highest civilian honour of Cyprus.
The decoration was instituted in 1981 by then President of the Republic of Cyprus, Spyros Kyprianou.
With this, Prime Minister Modi becomes the fifth foreign head of state to receive the prestigious award.
Previously, the honour has been bestowed upon former Australian Prime Minister Gough Whitlam, then Italian Prime Minister Giulio Andreotti, then Austrian Prime Minister Karl Nehammer, then Luxembourg Prime Minister Xavier Bettel, and Queen Maxima of the Netherlands.
