New Delhi, June 17, 2025:
Union Minister of Power, Housing and Urban Development Manohar Lal today chaired a high-level meeting with senior officials from the Ministries of Petroleum & Natural Gas, Road Transport & Highways, Heavy Industries, and NITI Aayog.
The meeting focused on reviewing the roadmap for the effective implementation of CAFE-III (Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency) standards in the automobile sector.
The discussions centered on strengthening policy frameworks, promoting clean and sustainable mobility, ensuring energy efficiency, and developing coordinated strategies to reduce carbon emissions from vehicles.
Minister Manohar Lal emphasized the government’s commitment to advancing energy-efficient and low-emission transportation solutions for a greener future.
What is CAFE-III?
CAFE-III refers to the third phase of Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency standards, which set targets for the average fuel consumption and carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions of all vehicles sold by a manufacturer. Unlike norms that apply to individual car models, CAFE standards require automakers to ensure that the overall fleet they sell meets specific fuel efficiency and emission benchmarks. This approach encourages manufacturers to produce more fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly vehicles, helping reduce oil dependence and air pollution.
